Moving medical testing to the Point of Care
A large number and variety of medical tests are carried out in hospital labs, but there are many reasons, partly economic, to carry these out at the Point of Care (POC), for example the doctor’s office or first-aid facility. This also allows medical staff to act more quickly in urgent cases.
One way of performing POC tests is by using MEMS technology microfluid systems, an area in which TEGEMA excels. By mixing optical markers that react with human proteins into a blood sample, an optical signal can be generated which can indicate specific possible illnesses – this could even be done using a standard CD player.
